Ray Ryan was a well-known Cape photographer and the 1078 photographs in his collection deals mostly with historical houses and buildings, churches, nature, mountain passes, monuments and statues, etc. He was also an instructor at the Ruth Prowse School of Art and his particular focus was the architecture of the Western Cape. In his book 'Beautiful Homesteads of the Western Cape' (1972) his enthusiasm for our endemic architecture may be seen.

William "Bloke" Modisane

William Bloke Modisane was born on 28 August, 1923, in Alexandra, a township in Johannesburg; his parents were Ms. D Morope and Mr. J Modisane who was murdered by an African man who was jailed for only six months, and was released after four and Half months for good behavior. He resided in Sophiatown. Mr. Modisane was baptized in the Lutheran Church, Berlin Mission in Sophiatown on the 24 September 1924, was confirmed in the Lutheran Church, Berlin Mission Sophiatown on the 6 April 1941. Mr. W. Modisane was married and had a daughter with his wife, whom he later divorced.

His education begun at the Dutch Reformed Mission, Meyer Street in Sophiatown, under the then principal Mr. Nakeni, Mr. W.Modisane proceeded to the Orlando High school to further his education. He lived with his parents at 101 Victoria Road in Sophiatown for 23 years until he left South Africa for the United Kingdom in 1959.
