The Municipality of Venterstad, which was formerly known as Ventersburg, was granted municipality regulations on 31 July 1882 in terms of Proclamation No 121 of 1882 under provision of Ordinance No 9 of 1836 (Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette No 6277 of 4 August 1882). Due to post being misdirected to Ventersburg, Transvaal, the name was changed to Venterstad in 1883 by virtue of Government Notice No 573 of 1883 (Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette No 6375 of 29 May 1883).
In 1994 Venterstad became part of the Eastern Cape Province. It forms part of the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality, one of three local municipalities that falls under the Joe Gqabi District Municipality.
On 28 January 1858 the division of Oudtshoorn was subdivided into six districts for Divisional Council purposes of Act No 5 of 1855 (Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette No 2899 dated 29 January 1858, Proclamation dated 28 January 1858). The first meeting of the Council was held on 23 June 1858.
On 1 July 1976 the Divisional Council of Oudtshoorn was reconstituted with the Divisional Council of Uniondale to form the amalgamated Divisional Council of Klein Karoo-Langkloof.
A meeting of the landowners of the Fort Beaufort Division was held on 16 October 1848 in terms of Ordinance No 8 of 1843 and of Ordinance No 7 of 1848. The purpose of this meeting was to elect Commissioners for a Divisional Road Board in the Division of Fort Beaufort. The first meeting of the Commissioners was held on 23 October 1848 (4/FBF 1/1/1/). The Board ceased to function on the promulgation of Act No 5 of 1855.
In terms of a proclamation dated 13 May 1857 and under virtue of Act No 5 of 1855, the district of Fort Beaufort was subdivided for Divisional Council purposes (Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette No 2824, 15 May 1857). The first meeting of the Council was held on 19 August 1857 (4/FBF 1/1/1/1).
On 1 January 1956 the Divisional Councils of Victoria East and Stockenström amalgamated with the Divisional Council of Fort Beaufort (4/SKS 4/1/2 No D/8).
On 1 January 1979 the Divisional Council of Fort Beaufort was reconstituted together with the Divisional Councils of Bedford and Somerset East to form the amalgamated Divisional Council of Smaldeel (The Province of the Cape of Good Hope Official Gazette No 4061, 20 July 1979, Proclamation No 174, 18 July 1979).
The districts into which the Division of Hanover were to be subdivided for the purposes of Act No 4 of 1865 were proclaimed on 1 February 1881 in terms of Proclamation No 21 of 1881 (Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette No 6108, 4 February 1881). The first meeting of the Council was held on 2 May 1881 (4/HAN 1/1/1/1).
On 1 January 1980 the Divisional Council of Hanover was reconstituted together with the Divisional Councils of De Aar and Philipstown to form the amalgamated Divisional Council of Bo-Karoo (The Province of the Cape of Good Hope Official Gazette No 4061 of 20 July 1979, Proclamation No 174 of 18 July 1979).
In terms of Proclamation No 33 of 1861 dated 13 May 1861 the district of Stockenström was subdivided for Divisional Council purposes (Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette No 3250, 17 May 1861). The first meeting of the Council was held on Tuesday, 20 August 1861 (4/SKS 1/1/1/1).
On 1 January 1956 the Divisional Councils of Victoria East and Stockenström amalgamated with the Divisional Council of Fort Beaufort (4/SKS 4/1/2 No D/8).
The District of Victoria East was subdivided for Divisional Council purposes by a proclamation dated 18 April 1857, in terms of Act No 5 of 1855 (Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette No 2817, 21 April 1857).
On 1 January 1956 the Divisional Councils of Victoria East and Stockenström amalgamated with the Divisional Council of Fort Beaufort (4/SKS 4/1/2 No D/8).
The Municipality of Oudtshoorn was constituted on 26 August 1863 under provision of Proclamation No 29 of 1863 in terms of Ordinance No 9 of 1836 (Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette, No 3497, 1 September 1863).
In terms of the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act, 1998 (Act 117 of 1998) the existing Oudtshoorn Municipality as well as the De Rust/Blomnek Transitional Local Council, Bo-Langkloof Transitional Representative Council, Dysselsdorp Transitional Council and Oudtshoorn Transitional Representative Council was disestablished and the Oudtshoorn Local Municipality established (Province of Western Cape Provincial Gazette Extraordinary No 5592, 22 September 2000, Provincial Notice No 502, 22 September 2000). The Oudtshoorn Local Municipality forms part of the larger Garden Route District Municipality (previously known as the Eden District Municipality).
The Divisional Council of Prieska was constituted on 30 June 1887 in terms of Proclamation No 113 (Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette No 6875, 1 July 1887). The first meeting of the Council was held on 23 August 1888 (see volume 4/PKA 1/1/1/1, p 2).
On 1 January 1980 the Divisional Council of Prieska was reconstituted together with the Divisional Councils of Britstown and Hopetown to form the amalgamated Divisional Council of Prieska (The Province of the Cape of Good Hope Official Gazette No 4061 dated 20 July 1979, Proclamation No 174 dated 18July 1979).
On 1 January 1980 the Divisional Councils of Robertson and Montagu were reconstituted together to form the amalgamated Divisional Council of Wynland (The Province of the Cape of Good Hope Official Gazette No 4061 of 20 July 1979, Proclamation No 174 of 18 July 1979).
On 31 March 1989 the Divisional Council Area of Wynland and portions of the Divisional Council Areas of Witzenberg and Matroosberg were established as the Breërivier Regional Services Council (The Province of the Cape of Good Hope Official Gazette No 4580 of 31 March 1989, Provincial Notice No 331 of 31 March 1989).
On 25 September 1905 the division of Montagu was subdivided into six districts for Divisional Council purposes under provision of Act No 31 of 1899 (Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette No 8795a dated 13 October 1905, Proclamation No 360 dated 25 September 1905).
On 1 January 1980 the Divisional Council of Montagu was reconstituted together with the Divisional Council of Robertson to form the amalgamated Divisional Council of Wynland (The Province of the Cape of Good Hope Official Gazette No 4061 dated 20 July 1979, Proclamation No 174 dated 18 July 1979).
