The Municipality of George was granted Municipal Regulations on 24 March 1837 under the provisions of Ordinance 9 of 1836 (Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette No 1631 of 24 March 1937).

In terms of the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act, 1998 (Act 117 of 1998) the existing Municipality of George, Wilderness Municipality, Outeniqua Transitional Representative Council and the Bo-Langkloof Transitional Representative Council was disestablished and the George Local Municipality established (Province of Western Cape Provincial Gazette Extraordinary No 5592, 22 September 2000, Provincial Notice No 501, 22 September 2000). The George Local Municipality forms part of the larger Garden Route (formerly Eden) District Municipality.

A Municipality was established at Ladismith on 29 January 1862 under the provisions of Ordinance No 9 of 1836.

In terms of the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act, 1998 (Act 117 of 1998) the existing Ladismith Municipality together with other municipalities was disestablished and the Kannaland Local Municipality established (Province of Western Cape Provincial Gazette Extraordinary No 5592, 22 September 2000, Provincial Notice No 498, 22 September 2000). The Kannaland Local Municipality forms part of the larger Garden Route District Municipality.

The Municipality of Middelburg was constituted on 27 May 1856 in terms of the provisions of Ordinance No 9 of 1836.

In 1994 Middelburg became part of the Eastern Cape Province. It forms part of the Inxuba Yethemba Local Municipality, one of five local municipalities that falls under the Chris Hani District Municipality.

The Village Management Board of Montagu was established on 12 January 1882 under Proclamation No 6 of 1882 in terms of the provisions of the Village Management Act of 1881.

The Municipality of Montagu was constituted on 25 January 1895 under Proclamation No 27 of 1895 in terms of the provisions of the Municipality Act of 1882.

In terms of the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act, 1998 (Act 117 of 1998) the existing Transitional Council of the Municipality of Montagu (established in terms of Proclamation No 16 of 30 September 1994) together with other municipalities was disestablished and the Breede River/Winelands (later Langeberg) Local Municipality established (Province of Western Cape Provincial Gazette Extraordinary No 5590, 22 September 2000, Provincial Notice No 491, 22 September 2000). The Langeberg Local Municipality forms part of the larger Cape Winelands District Municipality.

The Municipality of Windsorton was constituted on 18 June1915 in terms of Proclamation No 127, 1915 under the provision of Ordinance No 10 of 1912 (Province of the Cape of Good Hope Official Gazette No 389, 6 August 1915).

Prior to the establishment of the Municipality, a Village Management Board constituted on 19 December 1913 had functioned in the area (Province of the Cape of Good Hope Official Gazette No 299, 30 January 1914). No archives of this latter board have remained preserved.

The Municipality of Windsorton was abolished on 1 November 1963 in terms of Proclamation No 189, 1963 (Province of the Cape of Good Hope Official Gazette No 3210, 1 November 1963).

On 1 January 1964, the Windsorton area was proclaimed a Local Area within the Division of Barkly West, in terms of Provincial Notice No 718 of1963 (Province of the Cape of Good Hope Official Gazette No 3212, 15 November 1963).

The Village Management Board of Bellville was established on 12 May 1922 under the provisions of Ordinance 10 of 1921.

The Municipality of Bellville was constituted on 10 July 1940 under Proclamation No 126 of 1940 in terms of the provisions of section 4(b) of Ordinance No 10 of 1921 and section 8(1) of Ordinance No 14 1938. The first election of councillors for the Municipality took place on 24 September 1940 in terms of Section 60 of Ordinance No 10 of 1912.

In terms of Proclamation No 27 of 28 May 1996 the Tygerburg Substructure was established on 29 May 1996 with the amalgamation of the municipalities of Parow, Bellville, Goodwood, Lingelethu West, Durbanville and Mfuleni and parts of Cape Town, Milnerton and the Cape Metropolitan Board (Province of the Western Cape Provincial Gazette Extraordinary, No 5051, 28 May 1996).

The Municipality of Uniondale was established on 15 November 1880 in terms of Proclamation No 140, 1880, under provision of Ordinance No 9, 1836 (Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette No 6084, 19 November 1880).

The Municipality of Uniondale was abolished with effect from 1 April 1978 in terms of Proclamation No 398, 1977 under provision of section 8(1) of the Municipal Ordinance, 1974 and Divisional Councils’ Ordinance, 1976. The area designated as Uniondale was assigned the name of Uniondale Local Area situated in the Division of Klein Karoo-Langkloof (Province of the Cape of Good Hope Official Gazette No 3972, 9 December 1977).

The Municipality of Somerset East was constituted on 17 March 1837 under provision of Ordinance No 9 of 1836 (Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette, No 1630 of 17 March 1837).

In 1994 Somerset East became part of the Eastern Cape Province. It forms part of the Blue Crane Route Local Municipality, one of seven local municipalities that falls under the Sarah Baartman District Municipality.

The Village Management Board of Riviersonderend was established on 28 July 1928 in terms of Proclamation No 173, 1928 under provision of Ordinance No 10, 1921 (Province of the Cape of Good Hope Official Gazette, No 1161, 3 August 1928).

Prior to the establishment of the Board, Riviersonderend was administered by a Committee of Management elected at a meeting of landowners held on 19 May 1928. Prior to this date the Dutch Reformed Church Council had administered the village (3/RSE 1).

The Board ceased to function in September 1940 after the establishment of a Municipal Council.

The Municipality of Riviersonderend was constituted on 10 July 1940 in terms of Proclamation No 125, 1940 under provision of Ordinances No 10, 1921 and No 10, 1912 (Province of the Cape of Good Hope Official Gazette, No 1892, 2 August 1940).

In terms of the Local Government Transition Act, 1993 (Act 209 of 1993) the local government bodies in the Riviersonderend Forum Area, namely the Municipality of Riviersonderend, was dissolved and a transitional local council under the name “Municipality of Riviersonderend” was established (Province of Western Cape Provincial Gazette Extraordinary No 4896, 30 November 1994, Proclamation No 88, 29 November 1994). In terms of the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act, 1998 (Act 117 of 1998) the existing Municipality of Riviersonderend together with other municipalities was disestablished and the Theewaterskloof Local Municipality established (Province of Western Cape Provincial Gazette Extraordinary No 5591, 22 September 2000, Provincial Notice No 493, 22 September 2000). The Theewaterskloof Local Municipality forms part of the larger Overberg District Municipality.

The Village Management Board of Napier was established on 28 April 1896 in terms of Proclamation No 150, 1896 under provision of the Villages Management Act, 1881 (Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette No 7811, 1 May 1896).

The Municipal Council of Napier held its first meeting on 11 April 1938 (Volume 3/NPR 1/1/1/1, minutes of meeting held on 11 April 1938). Regulations framed by the Municipality were approved in terms of Government Notice No 536 dated 10 November 1938 under the provision of Ordinances No 10, 1912 and No 12, 1926 (Province of the Cape of Good Hope Official Gazette No 1786, 11 November 1938).

The Transitional Council for the Area of Napier was established in terms if Proclamation 82 dated 30 November 1994.

On 22 September 2000 the Municipality of Bredasdorp together with the Bredasdorp Transitional Representative Council, Caledon Transitional Representative Council, Napier Transitional Council and Struisbaai Transitional Local Council were disestablished and the Cape Agulhas Local Municipality was established in terms of sections 12 and 14 of the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act 1998 (Act 117 of 1998) (Province of Western Cape Provincial Gazette No 5591 of 22 September 2000, Provincial Notice No 495 of 22 September 2000). The Cape Agulhas Local Municipality forms part of the larger Overberg District Municipality.
