Magistrate and Bantu Affairs Commissioner, Kuruman

A magistrate’s court was established at Kuruman in British Bechuanaland on 8 September 1887 (D Ward: British Bechuanaland Proclamations, 1885 – 1893, Proclamation No 39 BB dated 8 September 1887, pp 69 – 71). The territory of British Bechuanaland was annexed to the Cape Colony on 16 November 1895 (Government Gazette No 7762 dated 12 November 1895, Proclamations Nos 457 – 458, dated 11 November 1895).

The Magistrate of Kuruman was also appointed Native Commissioner on 1 October 1928 (Government Gazette No 1734 dated 26 October 1928, Government Notice No 1865 dated 26 October 1928). On 9 March 1955 the Native Commissioner received criminal jurisdiction in respect of any offence committed by a Native within the area of jurisdiction (Government Gazette No 5437 dated 25 March 1955, Proclamation No 78 dated 9 March 1955).

A Magistrate’s Court was established at Komgha on 17 December 1877 (Government Gazette No 5752 dated 14 December 1877, Proclamation 112 dated 13 December 1877).

The Magistrate of Komgha was also appointed Native Commissioner on 1 October 1928 (Government Gazette No 1734 dated 26 October 1928, Government Notice No 1865 dated 26 October 1928).

Magistrate and Bantu Affairs Commissioner, Alexandria

A magistrate's court was established at Alexandria on 15 September 1856.

The magistrate held periodical courts at Springmount, Sandflats, Boesmansrivier, Paterson and Kinkelbos. He also acted as inspector of native locations, deputy registrar of births and deaths and as chairman of the liquor licensing court.

Since c1946 the magistrate also acted as bantu affairs commissioner.
