Town Clerk, Municipality East London

The Municipality of East London was constituted on 22 April 1873 under Proclamation No 37 of 1873 in terms of Ordinance No 9 of 1836 (Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette No 4549, 29 April 1873).

In 1994 East London became part of the Eastern Cape Province. In 2000, East London became part of Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, also consisting of King William's Town, Bhisho and Mdantsane and is the seat of the Metro.

Town Clerk, Municipality Seymour

The Municipality of Seymour was constituted on 14 August 1862 under provision of Proclamation No 50 of 1862 in terms of Ordinance No 9 of 1836.

In 1994 Seymour became part of the Eastern Cape Province. It forms part of the Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality, one of six local municipalities that falls under the Amathole District Municipality.

Town Clerk, Municipality Venterstad

The Municipality of Venterstad, which was formerly known as Ventersburg, was granted municipality regulations on 31 July 1882 in terms of Proclamation No 121 of 1882 under provision of Ordinance No 9 of 1836 (Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette No 6277 of 4 August 1882). Due to post being misdirected to Ventersburg, Transvaal, the name was changed to Venterstad in 1883 by virtue of Government Notice No 573 of 1883 (Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette No 6375 of 29 May 1883).

In 1994 Venterstad became part of the Eastern Cape Province. It forms part of the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality, one of three local municipalities that falls under the Joe Gqabi District Municipality.

The Municipality of Barkly East was constituted by Proclamation No 145 of 1881 in terms of provisions of Ordinance No 9 of 1836.

In 1994 Barkly East became part of the Eastern Cape Province. It forms part of the Senqu Local Municipality, one of three local municipalities that falls under the Joe Gqabi District Municipality.

The Municipality of Alice was constituted on 22 March 1852 under the provisions of Ordinance No 9 of 1836.

Town Clerk, Municipality Burgersdorp

Burgersdorp was constituted a municipality by a proclamation of 5 March 1850 under the provisions of Ordinance No 9 of 1836. The municipality was originally administered by a municipal board of commissioners.

During a fire in the municipal offices at Burgersdorp in 1952 certain minute books, the series letters received and letters despatched, all financial statements and almost all correspondence until 1936 were destroyed. This accounts for the lacunae within the archives.

In 1994 Burgersdorp became part of the Eastern Cape Province. It forms part of the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality, one of three local municipalities that falls under the Joe Gqabi District Municipality.

Town Clerk, Municipality Uitenhage

The Municipality of Uitenhage was created by virtue of a proclamation dated 5 June 1841, published in Government Gazette No 1851 dated 11 June 1841. The municipality was proclaimed under the provisions of Ordinance No 9 of 15 August 1836.

In 1994 Uitenhage became part of the Eastern Cape Province. In 2001 Uitenhage was incorporated with Port Elizabeth and Despatch into the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality. On 23 February 2021, Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa approved and gazetted the decision to rename Uitenhage to Kariega.

Town Clerk, Municipality Umtata

The Village Management Board of Umtata was established in terms of Act 29 of 1881.

The Municipality of Umtata was constituted on 21 October 1882 under provision of Proclamation No 192, 1882 in terms of Act No 44 of 1882 (Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette, No 6303, 27 October 1882).

In 1976, Transkei was granted independence as a bantustan, a nominally independent state not recognised outside of South Africa, and Umtata served as the capital.

On 2 March 2004 Umtata was renamed "Mthatha". Mthatha is the main town of the King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape Province and the capital of OR Tambo District Municipality.

Town Clerk, Municipality Alexandria

The Village Management Board of Alexandria was established on 27 April 1886 under Proclamation No 56 of 1886 in terms of the provisions of the Village Management Act of 1881. This proclamation was repealed on 10 January 1890 by Proclamation No 5 of 1890.

On 22 July 1902 a Village Management Board was again established under Proclamation No 127 of 1902.

The Municipality of Alexandria was constituted on 9 February 1940 under section 4(b) of Ordinance No 10 of 1921 and section 10(a) of Ordinance No of 1912.
The first general meeting of the Council was held on 22 April 1940 (3/AXA 1/1/1/1).

In 1994 Alexandria became part of the Eastern Cape Province. It forms part of the Ndlambe Local Municipality, one of seven local municipalities that falls under the Sarah Baartman District Municipality

Town Clerk, Municipality Graaff-Reinet

The Graaff-Reinet Municipality was created by virtue of a proclamation dated 28 August 1845, published in Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette No 2071 of 29 August 1845. The first ordinary meeting of the Commissioners took place on 18 September 1845. In January 1969 the Municipality of Graaff-Reinet amalgamated with the nearby Municipality of Adendorp.

In 1994 Graaff-Reinet became part of the Eastern Cape Province. It forms part of the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality, one of seven local municipalities that falls under the Sarah Baartman District Municipality (formerly Cacadu District Municipality).
