Secretary, Divisional Council of King William's Town

The Divisional Council of King William’s Town was established on 22 February 1866 under Ordinance No 2 of 1866 (British Kaffraria Government Gazette, 22 February 1866). The first meeting of the Council was held on 25 May 1866.

On 1 January 1975 the Divisional Council of King William’s Town was reconstituted together with the Divisional Councils of Komga, Stutterheim and East London to form the amalgamated Divisional Council of Kaffraria (Cape of Good Hope Official Gazette No 3796 dated 6 September 1974, Proclamation No 298 dated 30 Augustus 1974).

The District of Victoria East was subdivided for Divisional Council purposes by a proclamation dated 18 April 1857, in terms of Act No 5 of 1855 (Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette No 2817, 21 April 1857).

On 1 January 1956 the Divisional Councils of Victoria East and Stockenström amalgamated with the Divisional Council of Fort Beaufort (4/SKS 4/1/2 No D/8).

In terms of Proclamation No 33 of 1861 dated 13 May 1861 the district of Stockenström was subdivided for Divisional Council purposes (Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette No 3250, 17 May 1861). The first meeting of the Council was held on Tuesday, 20 August 1861 (4/SKS 1/1/1/1).

On 1 January 1956 the Divisional Councils of Victoria East and Stockenström amalgamated with the Divisional Council of Fort Beaufort (4/SKS 4/1/2 No D/8).

Secretary, Divisional Council of Fort Beaufort

A meeting of the landowners of the Fort Beaufort Division was held on 16 October 1848 in terms of Ordinance No 8 of 1843 and of Ordinance No 7 of 1848. The purpose of this meeting was to elect Commissioners for a Divisional Road Board in the Division of Fort Beaufort. The first meeting of the Commissioners was held on 23 October 1848 (4/FBF 1/1/1/). The Board ceased to function on the promulgation of Act No 5 of 1855.

In terms of a proclamation dated 13 May 1857 and under virtue of Act No 5 of 1855, the district of Fort Beaufort was subdivided for Divisional Council purposes (Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette No 2824, 15 May 1857). The first meeting of the Council was held on 19 August 1857 (4/FBF 1/1/1/1).

On 1 January 1956 the Divisional Councils of Victoria East and Stockenström amalgamated with the Divisional Council of Fort Beaufort (4/SKS 4/1/2 No D/8).

On 1 January 1979 the Divisional Council of Fort Beaufort was reconstituted together with the Divisional Councils of Bedford and Somerset East to form the amalgamated Divisional Council of Smaldeel (The Province of the Cape of Good Hope Official Gazette No 4061, 20 July 1979, Proclamation No 174, 18 July 1979).

The division of Port Elizabeth was subdivided into six districts for Divisional Council purposes by means of a Proclamation dated 7 July 1856, published in the Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette No 2733, and in terms of the provisions of Act No 5 of 1855.

The Divisional Council of Dias was established on 1 January 1978 following the amalgamation of the former Divisional Councils of Port Elizabeth, Alexandria and Bathurst (W Albertyn: Official South African Municipal Yearbook, 1979, p 135).

Secretary, Divisional Council of Jansenville

The division of Jansenville was subdivided into six districts for Divisional Council purposes under terms of Act No 4 of 1865 (Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette No 6170 dated 2 August 1881, Proclamation No 126 dated 1 August 1881). The first meeting of the Divisional Council was held on 5 October 1881.

On 1 January 1980 the Divisional Council of Jansenville was reconstituted together with the Divisional Councils of Murraysburg, Graaff-Reinet, Pearston and Aberdeen to form the amalgamated Divisional Council of Kamdeboo (The Province of the Cape of Good Hope Official Gazette No 4061 dated 20 July 1979, Proclamation No 174 dated 18 July 1979).

On 1 March 1881 the division of Komga was subdivided into six districts for Divisional Council purposes under Act No 4 of 1865 (Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette No 6116 dated 4 March 1881, Proclamation No 48 dated 1 March 1881).

On 1 January 1975 the Divisional Council of Komga was reconstituted together with the Divisional Councils of East London, King William’s Town and Stutterheim to form the amalgamated Divisional Council of Kaffraria (The Province of the Cape of Good Hope Official Gazette No 3796 dated 6 September 1974, Proclamation No298 dated 30 August 1974).

The Divisional Council of Queenstown was constituted on 8 May 1857 in terms of Act No 5 of 1855.

On 1 January 1980 the Divisional Council of Queenstown was reconstituted together with the Divisional Councils of Sterkstroom, Cathcart, Molteno and Tarka to form the amalgamated Divisional Council of Stormberg (The Province of the Cape of Good Hope Official Gazette No 4061, 20 July 1979, Proclamation No 174, 18 July 1979).

The first meeting of the Council was held on 11 May 1881 (Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette No 6141 dated 6 May 1881, Notice dated 28 April 1881).

On 1 January 1975 the Divisional Council of Stutterheim was reconstituted together with the Divisional Councils of Komga, King William’s Town and East London to form the amalgamated Divisional Council of Kaffraria (The Province of the Cape of Good Hope Official Gazette No 3796 dated 6 September 1974, Proclamation No 298 dated 30 August 1974).
