Magistrate and Bantu Affairs Commissioner, Kuruman

A magistrate’s court was established at Kuruman in British Bechuanaland on 8 September 1887 (D Ward: British Bechuanaland Proclamations, 1885 – 1893, Proclamation No 39 BB dated 8 September 1887, pp 69 – 71). The territory of British Bechuanaland was annexed to the Cape Colony on 16 November 1895 (Government Gazette No 7762 dated 12 November 1895, Proclamations Nos 457 – 458, dated 11 November 1895).

The Magistrate of Kuruman was also appointed Native Commissioner on 1 October 1928 (Government Gazette No 1734 dated 26 October 1928, Government Notice No 1865 dated 26 October 1928). On 9 March 1955 the Native Commissioner received criminal jurisdiction in respect of any offence committed by a Native within the area of jurisdiction (Government Gazette No 5437 dated 25 March 1955, Proclamation No 78 dated 9 March 1955).

Secretary, Divisional Council of Kuruman

The first members of the Divisional Council of Kuruman were announced in a Government Notice dated 19 June 1907. In terms of this notice the members met for the first time on 30 July 1907 (Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette No 8973 dated 25 June 1907).

As from 1 January 1990 the division of Kuruman was entrusted with regional services council functions under the Regional Services Councils Act No 109 of 1985 (The Province of the Cape of Good Hope Official Gazette No 4621 dated 22 December 1989, Proclamation No 978 dated 22 December 1989).

Town Clerk, Municipality Kuruman

The Village Management Board of Kuruman was established on 12 June 1913 under provision of the Villages Management Act, 1881 and sections 80 and 81 of the South Africa Act, 1909, in terms of Proclamation No 144, 1913 (The Province of the Cape of Good Hope Official Gazette No 269, 11 July 1913).

The Municipality of Kuruman was established on 18 April 1916 under provision of section 10 of the Cape Municipal Ordinance, 1912 in terms of Proclamation No 71, 1916 (The Province of the Cape of Good Hope Official Gazette No 431, 21 April 1916).

In 1994 Kuruman became part of the Northern Cape Province. It forms part of the Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality, one of three local municipalities that falls under the John Taolo Gaetsewe (formerly Kgalagadi) District Municipality.
