The Municipality of Colesberg was established on 19 June 1840 under provisions of Ordinance No 9 of 1836.

In 1994 Colesberg became part of the Northern Cape Province. It forms part of the Umsobomvu Local Municipality, one of eight local municipalities that falls under the Pixley ka Seme District Municipality.
